Carrying a spare battery.

When a second pack earns its place in your bag, and how to carry it so no one questions it.

A spare battery roughly doubles your range and turns a charging problem into a non-event. It also adds weight to carry and a small ritual at security. Whether it’s worth it depends entirely on how you travel.

Worth it, or not

Carry a spare if

  • You’re out for a full day between charges
  • Your destination’s charging access is uncertain
  • You’re covering more than the chair’s rated range in a day
  • Being stranded with a flat battery would be a serious problem, not an inconvenience
  • You’re travelling somewhere hilly or cold, both of which cut range

Probably skip it if

  • You charge overnight and your daily distances are short
  • You’re mostly indoors or close to home
  • The extra weight to carry is itself a problem
  • Your trips are comfortably inside a single charge

Carrying one on a plane

Four rules. Follow them and a spare is a non-issue; break one and it can be confiscated.

  1. In the cabin, never the holdA spare lithium battery is carry-on only, with every airline, without exception.
  2. Protect the terminalsUse the battery pouch, or tape over the contacts. This stops anything metal in your bag from bridging them.
  3. Stay within the allowanceOne spare up to 300 Wh, or two up to 160 Wh each. Every Seraphin spare is inside this.
  4. Have the rating visibleThe watt-hour figure marked on the pack lets security confirm it in seconds instead of holding you up.

The pouch

We sell a terminal-protecting pouch sized for the Seraphin packs. It’s the simplest way to meet the terminal rule, and it stops a loose spare rattling around your bag. Add one with your chair or any spare battery.

Add a battery pouch

Airline policies change and vary by carrier, route, aircraft and destination. This is a starting point, not a substitute for confirming with your airline before you travel. Seraphin supplies your battery documentation; only the airline can approve your battery. Last reviewed July 2026.
